Pathways Reception and Demo

Thank you to all that came to yesterday's reception and demo. At one point the room was quite full with curious onlookers and I was able to share my enthusiasm and joy for encaustic painting. I demonstrated several techniques but my focus was on image transfers enhanced with layers of wax medium and pigment.

I had prepared several wood panels with wax medium in order to show the different stages involved with the image transfer technique that I used in the Pathways Series. The panel below was started before the demo and at the demo I added layers of detailed color and medium. One more layer to add greater depth should complete this piece.

It was important to me that everyone see what I consider the most important first step of fusing the image into wax (shown below). Watching the image mesh into the wax medium is always a highlight. I will fill in gaps when I incorporate details with pigment.

These enthusiastic patrons stayed for the entire length of the demo, thank you for coming, asking questions, and sharing in my passion.

  1. I just love the way the piece looks as it stands. A faerie forest! Beautiful work, Robin, and so happy your show/demo went so well!

  2. Thank you, Sherry. I am leaning toward keeping the addition of a few more details to a minimum. Or maybe I will take your advice and leave it as is!

  3. I wish I could have been there. I love the way the unfinished piece looks, too. To me it looks like a beautiful but scary piece of a memory--parts have been let go or forgotten. I look forward to seeing it finished, though, in your authentic voice.

  4. I wish all of my blog friends could have been there too, Hallie. But, the next best thing... is sharing in a blog! I may do very little to the 2nd piece, it definitely needs more wax medium and I was going to stick to a limited palette. Hopefully I will have the time this week to finish what I started.

  5. It looks like you had a wonderful demo! Your work looks gorgeous on the walls around you and everyone looks totally enthralled by your process. I love the look of both of your demo pieces and totally agree with Hallie's interpretation of the 2nd one. It created an emotionally charged response in me as soon as I saw it. Haunting...

  7. Don, everyone really was enthralled which is what made it so great! I am glad the mood conveyed. I still haven't had time to setup and finish my demo paintings but I am going to listen to all of you and not work on the 2nd demo, it just needs one more layer of wax medium to protect it.

Eva how I wish we could all visit, create, and paint together. Yep, I definitely was prepared because last year when I did an encaustic demo I did not prep enough panels. I had much more fun because I was prepared for everything.

  8. I've never seen encaustic being done and must say I really don't understand the process - would love to have seen your demo! Glad it went well and hopefully you've created a budding encaustic artist or two in the process.
