Hidden Sunset

My series "Sea and Sky" continues with this first painting of the new year. I had been thinking about painting a serene, bland abstract of the ocean and sky ever since I completed the turbulent ocean paintings last month but just have not had the time to focus until this week. I am still not clear as to which method of encaustic painting I prefer - image transfers or free-hand paintings. I am hoping I find my niche with the medium soon.

  1. What a nice way to start off the new year. I love those complimentary colors. Your subtle use of them is quite soothing.

My question would be, why do you need to choose a preferred method? Why not continue to explore variations of each? I'll bet that if you continue working on a series with each method you'll find yourself exploring overlapping variations which would lead to new discoveries and even more series. Personally, I fear niches. They're like ruts to me...

    Happy Creating!

  2. Hi Don, I guess I feel like I should be an artist that is associate with a specific style, so I don't confuse my patrons or myself! But you make a good point and in the end I always end up following my instincts rather than logic so I guess I will just go with the flow and try to not define where I am at. Honestly I was grateful just to find the time to focus on painting this week, first time in many weeks and I am anxious to get started on the next piece, whatever that may be.

  3. What a wonderful start to the new year with this soothing work!
You are on your path. I always want to know where I'm going and what I'm doing thinking it will help me focus. In the end, I must learn to be patient and not try to control the process so much. I'll let you know if I have any luck with that! HaHa!!

  4. And I've never known where I'm going. I do understand the reason for being associated with a specific style.

  5. A very calming piece, Robin! Like you, I'm struggling to find a niche (the gurus say you MUST have one), but Don does have a point in that you can get into a rut very easily. The trick is to find a balance... not easy!

  6. Pam, it's not easy wanting to always know what you are doing, and definitely can be stifling to the creative process. Patience is a virtue.

Hallie, I need to be more like you.

Deborah, maybe just having the awareness of wanting to find a niche is all we need to do, I think the gurus say something about being aware and present, too.

  7. I like the serenity and glow of this piece. Encaustic seems like a great medium for this subject matter. Would love to see it in person.
