All in a day's work

"Lakefront Trail"
8" x 8" encaustic mixed media on panel

I knew from the small works I painted earlier this week that I also wanted to paint a larger version of the autumn colors. I am still thinking this work is not enough for me to feel "done" with burnt orange and golden sunlight and I may have to do an even larger 24" x 24" version! Using small works as a study makes working larger on the same subject a lot smoother, the composition has already been worked out in my mind and things just flow.

Several weeks of hard work have left me burnt out from painting (for now)… so the paints are cleaned up and put away forcing me to take a break. I am going to see "Madama Butterfly" at the Lyric Opera house tonight. It will be wonderful to drift into another world.

  1. Makes me want to walk along the lakefront myself. Hope you enjoyed the opera. I've never been but I've walked back and forth in front of the Lyric Opera House twice a day for 5 years when I worked at the Merchandise Mart.

    1. The opera was beautiful, the building is amazing. You must have had a nice walk along the river.

  2. This painting makes me want to walk down that path. I love the colors and the shadows on the path are wonderful. It sounds like you are enjoying Chicago.

    1. Nancy, new inspiration in a new city, but I manage to find beauty in nature even if it's surrounded by high rises.

  3. Overwhelmingly protective trees, I would love to walk in their shade! And 24by 24 would be awesome, looking forward to it, now you enjoy your break and come back with a bang!

    1. Every day I photograph when I walk my dog, the trees are looking mighty barren now. I am picking up large panels today, hope to start my larger painting in the next few days.
