more sculptural paintings

A couple of weeks ago I saw on a facebook post that the Ampersand Company had created a special panel for encaustic painters. They were offering painting boards that were already treated and "primed" with a white ground and when I called to order some of these boards, I was also offered free samples! Within a week, I received 2 small boards that were 3"x 5" and 5" x 7". I also ordered square cradled panels along with the trading card size.

3.5" x 2.5", these paintings will be floated and mounted in a 6" x 6" shadowbox frame

3" x 5", Autumn Pond

My encaustic paintings are starting to have more depth with layers of color, I am focused on creating sculptural qualities (I had trouble scanning the images because the 3-dimensionality throws off the scanner).

  1. I plan to attend a trade show in November (Art of the Carolinas in Raleigh) and look at those encaustic boards. I've had the R&F paints for several years. I use Ampersand cradled boards for most of my acrylic paintings. Your works with the overhanging branches look like my back yard--beautiful.

  2. Hallie, I never needed to paint on a board with watercolors but now I am discovering so many options when I paint with wax. These boards are nicer than the plain birch panels I was painting on but they also are more expensive. Let me know what you think after the trade show.

  4. Love these Robin. You did a great job scanning them as I can see the texture and depth.

  5. I'm amazed how you can guide the wax in thin lines like that. My encaustic blobs are just that! Do you use a plain encaustic iron or fine scuplting tools? I can only get an idea of the texture here, perhaps a photo from the side will reveal the depth.

  6. I love the 3-D-ness of these. Looking forward to seeing where this path leads you.

  8. Thanks, Eva.

Mark, I paint with wax using small paint brushes and work quickly plus I do use sculpting tools. A side photo is a good idea but so far I have had better luck scanning my small works because there is glare when I use my camera but I will try what you suggest.

I love the 3-d ness of this medium too, Deborah!

Celeste, Ampersand is covering all disciplines including great customer service, too.
