Tuscan landscape, redux

Today turned into a fix-it day and I decided to have some fun. I reworked one of my Tuscany paintings with the attitude that the worst I could do was ruin it, it already was not working for me the way it was so there was no down side!

"Tuscan Vineyards"
12" x 12" encaustic and oil pastel on panel

I built up layers of clear wax medium plus I decided to use oil pastel in between each layer. I wanted to loose the texture and details from the earlier version and dilute some of the background colors. I am still learning how to fuse the wax with just the right amount of heat. I was able to develop a more ethereal, dream like feeling with the addition of oil pastels.

The first version is shown below -

  1. You must have found just the right amount of heat. What a change--the newer version is much better. I like the darker landscape and the big-cloud sky.

  2. Still like both versions, but the more muted colors are lovely!

  3. Hallie, I wanted the newer version to have more of a dream-like quality, layering the wax does that.

The older version doesn't exist anymore, Sherry! But the revised version is actually closer to the real life colors from the photo I was using.

  4. I like both versions too. The landscape in the original version reminds me of some of Van Gogh's work.

  5. Eva, I am going to continue to work on the Tuscan landscape, so there will be more versions to come in the future. How wonderful if this connected you to Van Gogh, in any way shape or form!

  6. I like both versions. It's amazing how different each one is. I didn't know that you could combine the oil pastels with the wax. What a great technique.

  7. Nancy, you can also combine soft pastel, watercolor, and oil paint with encaustic medium... not to mention found objects and anything else for collage. I am still exploring!
